What to bring on a Grand Canyon day trip from Las Vegas
Short answer: bring more water than you think, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), layers for cool mornings and hot afternoons, comfortable closed shoes, a camera and some snacks. It’s a long day in a hot, high-desert environment.
The essentials
- Water — the desert is dry and dehydrating; carry a refillable bottle.
- Sun protection — hat, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen. There is little shade at the rim.
- Layers — mornings can be in the 40s°F and afternoons in the 90s; a light jacket helps.
- Closed, comfortable shoes — you’ll be walking on uneven rim paths, not boardwalks.
- Snacks — lunch is usually included, but a long day needs fuel between stops.
- Camera or phone — though note you can’t take your own onto the Skywalk bridge.
What you don’t need
You don’t need hiking gear for a standard day tour — you’re visiting viewpoints, not hiking into the canyon. Leave the big backpack; a small daypack is plenty.
